Greenville Women Giving...a special initiative of the Community Foundation
In 2006, the Community Foundation of Greenville celebrated its 50th anniversary and, in recognition of that milestone, supported the formation of Greenville Women Giving, a special initiative of the Community Foundation. Greenville Women Giving was founded on the idea that women who are informed about philanthropy and about needs in their community can collectively make a real difference.
In its inaugural year, the Community Foundation matched the contributions of the first 50 members with $50,000, increasing the impact of the group's first grants. Appropriately, the matching funds came from the Jean Harris Knight Fund at the Community Foundation, a fund made possible by the generous bequest of this Greenville woman. The Community Foundation has continued to provide support to this special initiative and has contributed $200,000 to Greenville Women Giving. In its first four years, membership has grown to 350 women and over $1 million has been given to worthwhile projects in Greenville County.
Membership in Greenville Women Giving
Membership in the organization is open to any woman who commits to donate $1,000 per year for 3 years to the collective fund. In addition, there is a $100 annual charge to cover administrative costs.
Educational programs of Greenville Women Giving
Educational opportunities are provided throughout the year so that women can lean about community needs and the organizations attempting to address them. Members and guests are invited to all educational sessions.
Grantmaking by Greenville Women Giving
High impact grants of $40,000 - $100,000 are awarded annually through a competitive grant process in the areas of arts and culture, education, environment, health, and human services. The Grants Review Committee is composed of members who evaluate grant applications and select a slate of proposals to be presented to the full membership for their vote.
