Hollingsworth Funds Grant Making Philosophy

John D. Hollingsworth, Jr. was an astute textile executive and real estate investor who owned and operated a world leading fiber-processing machinery and textile carding business from his Greenville County headquarters.  Mr. Hollingsworth also was a very private person whose charitable gifts were made quietly and anonymously during his lifetime. Only after his death did the Greenville community learn of his magnificent charitable legacy and interests.   Mr. Hollingsworth left the bulk of his estate to The Hollingsworth Funds, Inc. for the benefit of Furman University, the YMCA and for charitable organizations that operate or conduct affairs for the benefit of charitable uses within Greenville County, South Carolina, or for the benefit of residents of Greenville County.

Consistent with the purposes established by its benefactor, the Hollingsworth Funds will serve a broad range of charitable, educational, religious, literary and cultural purposes.  The Hollingsworth Funds has adopted initial guidelines in order to assist its evaluation of charitable organizations for funding. The Hollingsworth Funds:

  • Will give priority to new and innovative projects that are outside of the scope of an organization’s ongoing operating budget.
  • Will not make scholarship awards or grants to individuals.
  • Will make grants to health and human service agencies dedicated to improving quality of life for residents of Greenville County and particularly for those which deliver services to the poor, homeless, and illiterate.
  • Will make grants to interdenominational faith-based programs that benefit a broad cross-section of our community.
  • Will not make grants that primarily benefit the religious activities of a church, synagogue, mosque or other house of worship.
  • Will make grants to a wide variety of arts and education related initiatives including high quality preschool and after school programs.
  • Will not make grants for core operating expenses of public, private or parochial schools.
  • Will make for grants for capital projects that provide a public benefit on a nondiscriminatory basis.
  • Will not make grants to pay off existing debts.
  • Will not make grants for areas that are traditionally the primary responsibility of local, state or federal governments.
  • Will make grants to increase the organizational capacity of a non-profit organization.
  • Will not make grants to sponsor special fundraising events, celebration functions, dinners or annual meetings.
  • Will make grants to public/private partnerships.
