Grantmaking Philosophy

Consistent with the purposes established by its benefactor, Hollingsworth Funds will serve a broad range of charitable, educational, religious, literary and cultural purposes.

Hollingsworth Funds has adopted these guidelines to assist in its evaluation of charitable organizations for funding.

  • Will give priority to new and innovative projects that are outside of the scope of an organization’s ongoing operating budget.
  • Will not make scholarship awards or grants to individuals.
  • Will make grants to health and human service agencies dedicated to improving quality of life for residents of Greenville County and particularly for those which deliver services to the poor, homeless, and illiterate.
  • Will make grants to interdenominational faith-based programs that benefit a broad cross-section of our community.
  • Will not make grants that primarily benefit the religious activities of a church, synagogue, mosque or other house of worship.
  • Will make grants to a wide variety of arts and education related initiatives including high quality preschool and after-school programs.
  • Will not make grants for core operating expenses of public, private or parochial schools.
  • Will make for grants for capital projects that provide a public benefit on a nondiscriminatory basis.
  • Will not make grants to pay off existing debts.
  • Will not make grants for areas that are traditionally the primary responsibility of local, state or federal governments.
  • Will make grants to increase the organizational capacity of a nonprofit organization.
  • Will not make grants to sponsor special fundraising events, celebration functions, dinners or annual meetings.
  • Will make grants to public/private partnerships.
