Greg Blatt & Coaches 4 Character

Twenty years as a college basketball coach taught Greg Blatt a lot about the value of relationships and teamwork.  And those are the two words he uses most often to describe his work with Coaches 4 Character, a nonprofit focused on education and character development of at-risk students.

The speaker series features sports icons who address local students four times each year on critical issues like gangs, drugs and alcohol, bullying, self-esteem, teen pregnancy, and high school graduation.  Over 20,000 young people in grades 4 - 12 have heard their messages over the past five years and about 90% of them are at-risk students.

From the very beginning, Greg has relied on a team of community partners to give every student hope and a chance to succeed in life.  Through his relationships in college athletics, Greg has brought in big names like Roy Williams, Rick Barnes, Dabo Swinney, Vivian Stringer, Steve Spurrier and Tom Izzo, to name a few, who inspire with their messages of determination, education, perseverance and dreaming big.

The big challenge in getting the message to at-risk kids is getting them there.  So Coaches 4 Character organized the Big Bus Alliance to provide bus transportation and a meal to 1,600 young people each year from Title 1 schools and other nonprofit programs benefiting at-risk youth.

Coaches 4 Character Awards are also given at each program to Greenville County students based on exemplary character and Students 4 Character radio broadcasts have been added to deliver meaningful character messages from Upstate students.

From the testimonials of guidance counselors, parents and students, it’s clear that these speakers and events are making a difference.  And Greg is still doing what he loves—coaching young people.
